LG Health Awarded Grant for Apprenticeship Program
Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) positions in the state will increase over nine percent between 2016 and 2026, according to a PA Workforce Needs Assessment. To help meet the demand of qualified STEM employees, Governor Tom Wolf launched PAsmart in 2018 to increase STEM and computer science education, and job training to prepare workers with the skills that meet the growing businesses need. Lancaster General Hospital received the first PAsmart Apprenticeship and Next Generation Industry Partnerships grant.
LGH will use the funds for an apprenticeship program, creating a pipeline of experienced maintenance staff. The program will bridge the skill gap between new graduates and experienced maintenance personnel and provide on-the-job training focused on technical and soft skills. “LG Health is focused on advancing the health and well-being of our community, not only as a health care provider, but also as an employer. This grant provides us the opportunity to invest in our future workforce,” said John Hartman, senior director of Facilities Management.
