For the fourth year, submissions for Penn’s Global Health photo competition illustrate the many domestic and global health experiences of students from the Perelman School of Medicine and its trainees (residents, fellows).
This year’s winning photo was from medical student Kim Firn. As she explained in her submission, many remote villages in developing countries do not have access to screening techniques to detect early causes of blindness. As part of Botswana’s national eye health screening program, “a mobile device allows community health workers with solar charged backpacks to screen people in villages far from medical centers to help prevent blindness.”
Second place went to Isabel Straw, PhD, an MPH student. As she described, “the two girls in photo were sisters visiting our paediatric clinic in Al Zaatari Camp, which is the largest refugee camp on the Syrian border. I chose this photo because of the relationship between the sisters. The older sister insisted on every medical exam being done on her first before her younger sister. It was common in the setting of the camp to find siblings caring for each other in very protective ways.”
