Kevin B. Mahoney will take the reins of the Health System on July 1, succeeding Ralph W. Muller as its chief executive officer.
With 23 years of leadership roles at Penn Medicine, Mahoney has a “deep understanding of the culture of Penn Medicine, the alignment with the academic mission, the focus on clinical excellence, and innovation in health care delivery,” said J. Larry Jameson, MD, PhD, EVP of the University for the Health System and dean of the Perelman School of Medicine in a Philadelphia Inquirer article, when the news was announced in March.
Indeed, Mahoney developed and oversaw many of Penn Medicine’s large capital projects, including the master plan concept for transforming the former convention center site into the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine and the Roberts Proton Therapy Center. He also planned — and now oversees — construction of the Pavilion, the most advanced inpatient hospital facility in the nation, which is scheduled to open in 2021.
Mahoney was also an early supporter and promoter of innovation throughout the University and Penn Medicine. He cofounded the Penn Medicine Center for Health Care Innovation, a center designed for the rapid development, testing, and implementation of new strategies to deliver better health care experiences and outcomes. He also played a key role in Penn Medicine’s development and commercialization of six FDA-approved therapies in the last 18 months, and oversaw the implementation of a shared electronic health record system across five hospitals, numerous outpatient clinics, and home care, the only comprehensive system of its kind in the region.
“Kevin has an unrivaled breadth of experience and depth of knowledge of health care in an integrated academic medical center, combined with a profound personal commitment to Penn’s ambitious vision to build the academic health system of the future,” said University President Amy Gutmann, PhD.
Beyond his accomplishments throughout the Health System, Mahoney is well known for his many outreach efforts, which include serving on numerous boards for non-profit organizations in the Delaware Valley. He most recently received the 2018 Heart of Philadelphia Award from the American Heart Association for his dedication to community and volunteer work.
Mahoney called his appointment as the Health System’s next CEO “humbling. I am truly excited by this opportunity and am grateful to both President Gutmann and Dr. Jameson for giving me this unparalleled opportunity to continue serving Penn, Penn Medicine, and our patients.”
