All six Penn Medicine hospital entities were recently awarded an ‘A’ by Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing hospitals’ achievements protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care. Chester County Hospital, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania–Cedar Avenue, Lancaster General Hospital, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Pennsylvania Hospital, and Princeton Medical Center each received an ‘A’ grade for spring 2023.
The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers focused on health care safety, assigns an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D,’ or ‘F’ grade to all general hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care.
“I’m proud – but not surprised – that all of our hospitals earned this recognition,” said Kevin B. Mahoney, CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. “Safety is the underpinning of the world-class care we provide our patients. This honor is a testimonial to the tireless efforts of our thousands of dedicated employees.”
“The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is a comprehensive, evidence-based evaluation; it is never an easy ‘A,’” said Penn Medicine Princeton Health CEO James Demetriades. “Maintaining our top grade takes a commitment to patient safety and continuous quality improvement across the organization. I want to thank our staff, physicians, and medical staff leadership for the skill and dedication they bring to our patients every day.”
“To be recognized as an ‘A’ hospital demonstrates our ability to deliver highly reliable, sustainable and safe health care at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital,” said John J. Herman, CEO at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. “I am proud of our staff who continuously works to deliver care for our patients, with a dedication to the highest quality care possible. This national recognition highlights our commitment to provide the high-quality care our patients and our community expect and deserve.”
“This recognition is a result of the hard work of the hospital’s medical staff and nurses each and every day. Their commitment to providing safe and compassionate care to our community is admirable, and I could not be prouder of their dedication,” says Michael Duncan, president and CEO of Chester County Hospital.
