As the demand for exceptional cancer care close to home increased, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health considered opportunities for growth that would allow the health system to provide outpatient cancer services under one roof.

On July 8, 2013, the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute opened. To recognize its fifth anniversary, the Cancer Institute leadership held a special ceremony in June to acknowledge community donors and staff who have provided cancer care for more than 23,000 patients and their families.

While honoring the more than 100 staff members gathered in the Cancer Institute’s lobby for a musical celebration, Jan Bergen, LG Health president & CEO, remarked, “Our staff embraces every person who walks through these doors. You answer their many questions, help them make difficult choices, comfort them, welcome their loved ones and treat them with the respect, dignity and compassion that you would treat a loved one.”

Since opening, the Cancer Institute has received accolades for its tranquil design and calming atmosphere, while providing a seamless experience from treatment to support groups to image recovery.

Oncology program director Randall A. Oyer, MD, said, “In five short years, we’ve come together as a family and team that has a shared mindset. We know what the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute stands for, and we know what it means to work here. Each day when you come to work, no matter what door you walk through, no matter what your role, I want you to know that you are appreciated by your patients, their families, your co-workers and your leaders for the fine work you do here in this beloved Cancer Institute.”
