Year after year, lists like Best Doctors in America, America’s Top Doctors, and Philadelphia magazine’s “Top Docs” have included Michael N. Braffman, MD, among their ranks. But while these acknowledgments are certainly special, Pennsy’s house staff recently upped the ante as they recognized their beloved mentor.
In the span of a week, Braffman, an infectious disease specialist and chair of Medicine, was surprised with a socially distanced 65th birthday celebration on Pine Lawn, complete with balloons, baked goods, and a bagpiper; received the Edward D. Viner Teaching Award for his contributions to the professional development of the hospital’s residents; and was chosen as the inaugural recipient of a new award named in his honor.
The Dr. Michael N. Braffman Compassionate Leadership Award was created by house staff to demonstrate their gratitude for his unwavering guidance, and especially throughout the COVID-19 crisis. “No one expected us to face a pandemic during our training, and we are so lucky to have had his steady hand at the helm,” explained first-year resident Sydney Emerson, MD. Each year, this award will be given to a physician who embodies Braffman’s integrity, professionalism, humility, and commitment to leading with kindness and empathy.
More than 50 residents and colleagues contributed clips to a heartwarming video lauding Braffman’s achievements and thanking him for his inspiring intentionality, meaningful mentorship, and innate ability to elevate those around him. Third-year resident Tanuja Yalamarti, MD, described him as, “The Gandalf to [our] fellowship of residents, shepherding us with his kind spirit, gentle humor, and a keen sense of duty,” while second-year resident Stephen Schwartz, MD, noted, “I don’t think the Pennsy bond that we all share would be so special if it weren’t for the values that you taught us all.” There were even bonus appearances from his grandchildren, two of whom — clad in white coats, surgical masks, and capes — declared their “Saba” a hero.
Congratulations, Dr. Braffman, on these richly deserved honors. Thank you for offering a reassuring presence in a challenging time and for your commitment to showing the next generation of physicians what true leadership is.
