Amidst the anxiety and adversity caused by COVID-19, Environmental Services technician Shakasee Daniels has continued to serve as a bright spot for the Pennsy community. Described as a “dynamo” who has kept everything running smoothly even on the most stressful days for five years, Daniels knows that if she stays busy, maintains a positive attitude, and remains committed to doing the best she can every day, even this challenging time won’t bring her down.
Daniels works in the critical care unit, cleaning and disinfecting spaces on the front lines. Multiple times a day, she conscientiously wipes down beds, sinks, windows, and doors, re-stocks soap, hand sanitizer, and paper towels, empties trash, mops floors, and more, all to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Even on her days off, colleagues know they can reach out to her when they need guidance or advice. Deep breaths and prayers keep her centered, and she receives regular calls and messages from loved ones checking in and sharing words of motivation to carry her through.
“We’re dealing with a virus that can pass from patient to patient, nurse to nurse, doctor to doctor, and everything in between. That’s scary, and it’s really easy to feel down and demoralized. But I know that I can’t come to work afraid,” Daniels said. “It’s about putting the fear away and bringing the warrior out. The job still needs to be done professionally, and I know I have the tools to make a difference and keep our patients and staff safe.”
