Theresa Larivee Assumes New Role as UPHS Chief Business Officer
For more than eight years, I have gratefully served as CEO of Pennsylvania Hospital, a position that has had a profound impact on me and my career. Although I look forward to starting my new venture as Chief Business Officer for the University of Pennsylvania Health System, it is bittersweet to reflect on the meaningful connections I’ve made with staff and the PAH community in my tenure.
I have had the opportunity to work alongside an exceptional workforce, who always put the patient first and stay true to our mission of providing high-quality care, even during unprecedented times. It is truly this group of talented and compassionate staff who have shaped PAH into the comprehensive medical facility it is today. While we take pride in PAH’s past and its historical contributions to health care, it is exciting to look ahead to the future of the hospital. I am confident PAH is in good hands with our Executive Leadership Team and will continue innovating the way for clinical excellence.
A LOOK AHEAD: A Message from Acting CEO Dan Wilson, MBA, BSN, RN, FABC
Acting CEO Dan Wilson
I am humbled to assume the role of acting CEO and want to acknowledge Theresa’s leadership legacy. Although the past few years have brought forth many challenges in health care, Theresa never faltered in helping us navigate those obstacles, supporting opportunities to enhance the patient and staff experience. She has been a pivotal leader through COVID-19; our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion work; our Workplace Safety Efforts; and a very tight labor market and inflation — all of which occurred simultaneously and continue today. We have learned to live with COVID-19, we are still providing the excellent care PAH is known for, and we have made considerable progress on all these matters.
As the nation’s first hospital, PAH has a long history of overcoming the trials of each generation. I am optimistic we will continue to do so and have a bright future ahead.

“Theresa always focused on developing and supporting growth through program development, working with CPUP, the Penn Medicine Medical Group (PMMG), Department Chairs, and Service Lines in doing so, which contributed to PAH earning Magnet re-designation and an ’A‘ Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. She defined success by providing high-value care at PAH. I learned a great deal from her and wish her the greatest success in her new role at Penn Medicine.”
Daniel Feinberg, MD, Chief Medical Officer
“Under Theresa’s leadership, PAH saw sustainable growth in our signature programs despite adverse volume impacts from the pandemic. She led the establishment of the Penn Spine Center and the expansion of our ambulatory footprint, which helped grow our Neurosciences and Musculoskeletal programs. Women’s Health also hit an all-time high in births, and our Behavioral Program has never been stronger.
Shortly after arrival, she led an effort to change our approach to Executive Leadership as we adopted a ’Shared Leadership Model‘ which involved mutual accountability and ownership for each member of the Executive Leadership Team. The team grew stronger and shaped who we are today.
Theresa’s leadership skills were on full display as she guided us through the unprecedented challenges during the peak of the pandemic. Her unwavering commitment and dedication inspired us to be the best that we can be.”
Frank Anastasi, Chief Financial Officer
“Theresa’s leadership has been invaluable to continuing the legacy of Pennsylvania Hospital. A few years ago she established the First Hospital Historic Preservation Committee which, along with our Conservation Management Plan (CMP), has set in motion an achievable plan to preserve and conserve the Pine Building, historic grounds, and Historic Collections, for future generations.”
