Center for Brain Injury and Repair Presence at Philadelphia Science Festival Reaches Science Enthusiasts of all Ages

The Philadelphia Science Festival, from April 19 – 28 this week, celebrates the region’s strengths in science and technology, bringing together more than 100 partners from academia to museums to restaurants.The Festival will include an extensive line-up of programs and exhibitions designed to inspire the next generation of scientists and spark discussion among young and old. 

This year the Center for Brain Injury and Repair (CBIR) is reaching audiences of all stripes with their message of how to mind your brain from concussions with such demos as eggs in Styrofoam to mimic a human head in a helmet.

On Saturday, April 20 CBIR was part of the “Penn village” at the Science Carnival on Ben Franklin Parkway. They and many other Penn groups of exhibitors shared their knowledge and enthusiasm of science and technology:

• Laboratory for the Research of the Structure of Matter
• Netter Center for Community Partnerships
• School of Veterinary Medicine
• Upward Bound Math and Science 
• Biomedical Graduate Studies
• GRASP Lab

On April 22 at 3:30PM at the Independence Branch of the Free Library and again on April 24 at 3:30PM at the Cecil B. Moore Branch,  CBIR staff and researchers will share hands–on activities with students in an after-school program about how to keep your brain safe.

Then in the evening of April 22, 6:00 PM at City Tap House, join CBIR director Doug Smith for Tackling Concussions, a science café that will explore the importance of protecting your brain, along with Jayatri Das, Chief Bioscientist at The Franklin Institute and a Fellow of the Center for Neuroscience & Society at Penn.  

The CBIR group rounds out the week of brainy offerings Thursday April 25, 1:30PM with Science Day at the Ballpark. Cheer on the Phillies while exploring the science of sports. Before and during the game, a dozen hands-on activity stations will be set up throughout the concourse and outside on Citizens Bank Way. CBIR staff will again bring their brain ed to baseball fans.
