A new, expert Center for fibroids

Finding the right treatment for uterine fibroids isn’t easy. That’s why at Penn Medicine, we offer a one-stop Center where experts will listen respectfully, care deeply about your needs, and consider a range of options for your unique treatment plan.

Uterine fibroids may be common, but their treatment doesn’t have to be. At the Penn Center for Integrated Fibroid Care, you’ll find a variety of fibroid treatment options tailored to you, from early symptom management with medications, to minimally invasive surgery (including complex laparoscopic myomectomy) for women with large fibroids and those seeking alternatives to hysterectomy.

While patients with smaller fibroids can be treated by their personal gynecologists, our surgeons specialize in minimally invasive techniques for large fibroids and alternatives to hysterectomy, including complex laparoscopic myomectomy.

What Makes the Penn Center for Integrated Fibroid Care Different?

At Penn Medicine, we don’t just treat your fibroids. We treat you.

That means we care about your overall well-being. No one should have to tolerate painful fibroids that disrupt the way they live.

The Penn Center for Integrated Fibroid Care also serves the unique needs of each patient. We have the expertise and are particularly sensitive to the needs of Black women, who are three times more likely to have fibroids than white women, and often have more severe symptoms.

Our Comprehensive Approach is Different Too

Our approach is “integrated and patient centered.” This means that your care is coordinated, and you come first. Our new patient coordinators and clinical team will work with you to find the right expert and the right treatment for your needs. Our radiologists, gynecologic surgeons, and fertility specialists work together to test, diagnose, and treat you. They communicate with each other every day, and can share your records in seconds, saving you stress and time.

We’ll not only find the right fibroid treatment plan for you and your future goals, but help you answer a few important questions:

  • Would you like more children?
  • Would you like to continue your favorite exercise?
  • Do you want to avoid major surgery?
  • Can your own gynecologist treat you best?

The Penn Medicine Difference in Fibroid Treatment

The Penn Medicine team has decades of experience treating uterine fibroids, and offers the latest, least invasive surgical and medical techniques. We’re also a regional leader in gynecologic care, research, and education.

Here, you can feel confident that you’re in the right place.

Fibroid Treatment Options at Penn Medicine

Our uterine fibroid specialists are recognized experts in many surgical and non-invasive techniques. While many fibroids can be treated by your gynecologist, the multi-specialty team at the center is here when more complex care is needed.

Medications

Birth control pills, IUDs with hormones, and pain relievers can often help relieve the uterine fibroid symptoms that impact your life.

Minimally Invasive Surgeries and Procedures

Our team specializes in minimally invasive treatment of large fibroids, as well as alternatives to hysterectomy that let you keep your uterus, if that’s your priority. These treatments also let you get back to your busy life more quickly, with less pain.

The options available at Penn Medicine and their benefits include:

  • Robot-assisted surgical technology emphasizes smaller scars and quicker recovery time
  • Radiofrequency ablation shrinks fibroids with heat
  • Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) reduces blood flow to fibroids to minimize their growth and decrease their size
