One of the great things about Philadelphia is it's a city of runners. The Penn Running and Endurance Sports Program was inspired by the local running community to provide specialized care for runners of all ages and experience levels — from couch-to-5k to professional athletes — in Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs.

Our specialists — many lifelong runners and athletes themselves, who often run the same streets, parks, and trails as you — have a deep understanding of the injuries and physical demands that come with the sport. This experience has led us to develop a comprehensive program to accurately diagnose and treat both common and complex running injuries. Our work doesn't stop there, however. We know many runners are also interested in enhancing their performance. That's why we take a big picture approach to your treatment, providing a personalized plan to optimize recovery, prevent reinjury, and improve overall performance.

The Penn Running and Endurance Sports Program is a collaboration between Penn Sports Medicine and Good Shepherd Penn Partners. This ensures you have direct access to a diverse team of sports medicine experts including physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists, physical therapists, and orthopaedic surgeons as needed, whose goal is to get you back to the sport you love.

In this video, the Penn Running and Endurance Sports Program's co-directors, Drs. Vasudevan and Wise, discuss the importance of being treated by physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists and physical therapists who are passionate about and experienced in treating running and endurance sports injuries. They discuss the program's goals of addressing both common and complex injuries, optimizing recovery, and preventing re-injury for this community. We also hear from a runner who recounts his personal experience being treated by the program.

Why the Penn Running and Endurance Sports Program is Different

Our program is dedicated to caring for runners and other endurance athletes. With that comes many benefits for our patients:
  • Our team is comprised of experienced sports medicine physicians who have a personal passion for running. Dr. John Vasudevan of Penn Sports Medicine and Dr. Robert Wise of Good Shepherd Penn Partners serve as directors of the program and are respected members of the local athletic community, providing medical care for a number of athletic teams and races.
  • We provide expert diagnosis and treatment for the full range of running conditions. You will receive a thorough diagnostic exam and an individualized treatment plan that provides a whole-body approach to get you back to running and even improve performance.
  • Our program provides a continuum of care from diagnosis to treatment, through follow-up care and rehabilitation. We offer comprehensive non-surgical treatment options, as well as access to orthopaedic surgeons and other Penn Medicine surgical specialists when needed.
  • The long-standing collaboration between Penn Sports Medicine and Good Shepherd Penn Partners has allowed us to develop close working relationships throughout the region. As a result, you can expect high-quality treatment close to home.
  • We work closely with the Penn Center for the Female Athlete to address concerns that are specific to female runners.
