A BRCA Family Affair: The Garcia Family Shares Their Story

Learn about one family's journey with BRCA in this discussion between Basser Young Leadership Council member and patient advocate Nicole Garcia along with her mother, Mariana Garcia, and her sister, Marisa Martinez. Mariana, Marisa, and Nicole were all born and raised in San Antonio, TX. Nicole works in the TV Industry in Los Angeles, Marisa is currently a 3rd grade teacher in San Antonio, and their mother, Mariana, is a retired teacher. Nicole and her sister, Marisa, inherited a BRCA1 mutation from their father, Eusebio Garcia, who passed from cancer in 2018. The Garcia family will discuss how hereditary cancer has impacted their lives, how they've managed their personal cancer risk, and how the Latinx community can better educate themselves about family cancer history. The panel will be moderated by Alejandra Campoverdi, co-founder of the Basser Center's LATINX & BRCA initiative.

A cancer diagnosis is never easy — even when your genes tell you years or decades in advance that you might one day have cancer. Join us as Dr. Susan Domchek, Executive Director of the Basser Center for BRCA at Penn Medicine, moderates a panel of individuals sharing their stories about carrying a BRCA mutation. BRCA mutations increase the risk of various cancers, including breast, ovarian, prostate, and pancreatic and can be inherited from a mother or father. You'll hear from men and women across various communities, including Central Synagogue members and staff who will share how they have navigated learning about their BRCA mutation and the steps they have taken to reduce their risk.

Proceeds will benefit an organization called Live Like Brent Foundation, part of Carve for Cancer, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit that was founded in 2010. The Live Like Brent Foundation is dedicated to the mission of fighting blood cancers while inspiring others to live an impassioned life. It was conceived by blood cancer warrior Brent P. Evans in 2010 when he was diagnosed with stage IV non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Today, Brent's vision remains strong, and an army of dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to increase awareness, assist patients with financial needs, and raise funds for research for our partner hospitals from Philadelphia, Lehigh Valley, and Northeast Pennsylvania.

Join the 10th Annual Run for the Stripes event — in person or virtually. In-person participants can choose the 5k run or the one-mile family fun walk in person at the Philadelphia Zoo. If you're attending virtually, you pick the location, distance, and time: It's that easy! You can choose to run or walk in an area where you are comfortable and safe.

Proceeds from the race go to neuroendocrine (NET) cancer research at Penn Medicine's Abramson Cancer Center to find better treatment options and hopefully a cure for this rare cancer.
