Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program

ACC-PREP

The ACC has proudly partnered with the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) to offer a cancer-focused affiliate program of PennPREP, the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Learner (IDEAL) Research Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program. Integrated with PennPREP, ACC-PREP aims to increase the diversity of the cancer research workforce by providing a hands-on research experience to individuals from under-resourced backgrounds with baccalaureate degrees that have been historically excluded from the field of biomedical research. Candidates who are specifically interested in pursuing a doctoral degree (PhD or MD/PhD) in preparation for a career in cancer research, and who would benefit from protected time to develop research skills, are encouraged to apply.

Funded by the American Cancer Society’s Diversity in Cancer Research (DICR) Post-Baccalaureate Fellowship program, ACC-PREP scholars will be awarded a competitive stipend and health insurance in addition to the following:

Cancer-focused experiences:

  • full-time mentored research in an ACC member’s lab
  • 2-week Introduction to Cancer Research seminar with Penn faculty
  • participation in the ACC Introduction to Cancer Research seminar
  • networking with ACC faculty
  • individualized guidance in pursuing cancer research career goals
  • opportunities to serve as mentors to high school and undergraduate students in ACC programs

Academic and career development activities:

  • preparation for applying to and succeeding in graduate school
  • research seminars, retreats, and conferences
  • tuition for one academic course per semester
  • workshops in scientific writing, science communication, public speaking, career advising, and Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)
  • free standardized test preparation courses (GRE and MCAT)
  • application assistance, with a focus on the personal essays, research statements, and interview skills
  • funding to attend one conference
  • Social networking events with other PREP scholars and program staff, graduate students, and laboratory associates; and with DICR high school and undergraduate scholars across the ACC
