Foundation or Association Opportunities Promoting Diversity in Cancer Research

The following opportunities are intended for undergraduate, graduate, and medical students of backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in science and medicine who are interested in cancer research.

• American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) – Minority Summer Fellowship Award.
  Introduces medical students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in medicine to the discipline of radiation oncology. Application deadline: Early February.
• American Society of Hematology (ASH) Minority Recruitment Initiative Programs
  The ASH MRI offers a variety of awards within this initiative, such as the Minority Graduate Student Abstract Achievement Award, the Minority Medical Student Award Program, and the Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program. Click on the link to see all programs or learn more.
• American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Minorities in Cancer Research
  The AACR accepts applications for several mechanism types including research training and fellowships, career development awards, and independent research grants. Contact grants@aacr.org.
• American Cancer Society (ACS) Diversity in Cancer Research Internship
  A paid internship to expose underrepresented minority undergraduate students to cancer research and diversify the cancer workforce. Application deadline: October. Contact diversityEDS@cancer.org.
• Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation Diversity in Clinical Trials Career Development Program (BMSF DCTCDP)
  Opportunities available for early-stage clinical investigators and rising second-year medical students. Dr. Carmen Guerra represents the Abramson Cancer Center within this initiative. Contact Sybol Anderson, PhD for more information.
• Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) – Medical Student Rotation for Underrepresented Populations.
  Four-week clinical or clinical research rotation for U.S. medical students from populations underrepresented in medicine and who are interested in oncology as a career. Contact professionaldevelopment@asco.org. Application deadline: Late January.

Eligible to apply are those who propose a study focused on a marginalized group, or those who identify as being from an underrepresented group within the field of research.
