Individuals who develop bladder cancer are more likely to have certain risk factors for the disease. A risk factor is something that increases the chance of developing a disease.
Bladder Cancer Risk Factors
Although the exact cause of bladder cancer is unknown, certain factors can increase the risk of developing bladder cancer:
- Age
- Eating a diet high in fried food and fat
- Exposure to substances such as rubber, dyes in textiles, paint and hairdressing supplies
- Smoking
This does not mean that if you have one or more of these factors you will develop bladder cancer, but you may want to speak with a Penn Medicine physician to determine your risk.
