About Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal cancer is a complex disease. At the Abramson Cancer Center, world-class experts with decades of experience work side-by-side to bring you expert care.

Esophageal Cancer Symptoms

Having trouble swallowing (called dysphagia) is one of the most common signs of esophageal cancer. The sensation may feel similar to getting food stuck in your throat. Sometimes, it can even feel like you’re choking. Many problems that aren’t cancer can also cause dysphagia. Learn more about esophageal cancer diagnosis.

Other esophageal cancer symptoms may include:

  • Changes to your voice (which may sound hoarse or like you’re losing your voice)
  • Cough that lasts longer than two weeks
  • Heartburn that slowly gets worse (and never goes away)
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Pain felt near your check or back
  • Pain when you swallow

Types of Esophageal Cancer

We treat all types of esophageal cancer, including:

  • Adenocarcinoma usually develops in the lower half of the esophagus (near the stomach). It is the most common form of esophageal cancer in the US.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma often occurs in the upper esophagus. This type is less likely to affect people in the US but is more common worldwide.
  • Small cell carcinoma is a very rare esophageal cancer that arises from neuroendocrine (hormone-producing) cells. This type is treated differently than cancers that develop from cells that make up the esophagus inner lining (adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma).

Esophageal Cancer Risk Factors

A risk factor is something that can give you an increased chance of getting cancer. Having one or more risk factors does not guarantee that you’ll get cancer, though.

Uncontrolled acid reflux, smoking, alcohol, and obesity are established esophageal cancer risk factors. You can take proactive steps to protect your health by not smoking and drinking alcohol and seeking treatment for acid reflux and obesity. Learn more about esophageal cancer risks and prevention.
