While lung cancer treatment is lifesaving, it can come with unpleasant or even serious side effects. But you won't have to face these complications alone. We are available 24/7 to make sure you receive care at the right time:
- For concerns during regular business hours: Call your Abramson Cancer Center doctor's office Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm to connect with one of our nurses. Our triage nurses are available to assess your needs and get you the right help. They can also make medication recommendations and fill prescriptions over the phone.
- Non-emergency issues after regular business hours: You can send our triage nurses a message via MyChart by myPennMedicine. MyChart by myPennMedicine is a secure way to connect with your care team from your personal computer or mobile device. They will get back to you within 48 hours, and often the next business day.
- After-hour emergencies: Call the hospital's main number at 800-789-7366 and ask to speak to the oncologist on call.
The Oncology Evaluation Center (OEC) at the Abramson Cancer Center
Our Oncology Evaluation Center provides urgent care and same-day appointments for Penn Medicine patients who have cancer. It is staffed by nurse practitioners experienced in cancer care. These providers see patients on active treatment dealing with side effects that include:
- Diarrhea
- Dehydration
- Nausea and vomiting
- Shortness of breath
Patients receive necessary tests, including bloodwork, X-rays and CT scans. The nurse practitioner then discusses the findings with one of our lung cancer doctors. Together, they come up with a treatment plan.
The OEC helps patients avoid time-consuming emergency room visits. Effective and fast side effect management also helps make cancer treatment safer.
