Multidisciplinary Care Team
Penn doctors diagnose and manage systemic mastocytosis (and cutaneous mastocytosis) through collaborative work among specialties including Allergy and Immunology, hematology-oncology, dermatology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, and pathology.
Advanced and Personalized Diagnostics and Treatment
Penn doctors utilize the latest diagnostic tools to diagnose systemic mastocytosis. We are also skilled at assessing for other conditions that may mimic symptoms of mastocytosis. These tests may include laboratory blood tests, genetic tests, and biopsies.
Once a diagnosis is made, we provide an individualized management plan which includes avoiding triggers, antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers, biologics, and tyrosine kinase inhibitor.
Penn has engaged in clinical trials for systemic mastocytosis treatment. Our faculty are also investigating ways to improve screening and diagnosis of systemic mastocytosis.
Penn is designated a Center of Excellence in the American Initiative in Mast Cell Diseases (AIM) network.
Patients who wish to be seen in the Penn Allergy and Immunology clinic for mastocytosis evaluation or treatment should provide documentation from a referring physician(s), as well as relevant laboratory testing such as an elevated serum tryptase or biopsy concerning for mastocytosis. All referrals will be reviewed by a Penn physician.
