Penn PM&R and Good Shepherd Penn Partners Participate in Penn Medicine’s Patient Safety Collaboration with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Clinical focus iconThe Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Perelman School of Medicine’s Graduate Medical Education program recently were selected as a pathway leader to participate in the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s (ACGME) Pursuing Excellence Collaborative in Patient Safety. Penn is among nine institutions that were selected nationally to be a pathway leader. This Collaborative aims to create and test frameworks that train resident physicians and fellows to engage in systems-based practice approaches that promote a culture of patient safety. This is the initial Collaborative among a series that ACGME is developing that intends to engage resident physicians and fellows among several areas of focus including patient safety, health care quality, care transitions, supervision, fatigue management/well-being and professionalism. These Collaboratives grew out of the ACGME’s Clinical Learning Environment Review Program which promotes transformative improvements in clinical learning environments. The ACGME is a private, not-for-profit organization that this responsible for the accreditation of approximately 10,700 residency and fellowship training programs across 800 institutions in the United States.

Operationalizing this Collaborative across Penn Medicine’s facilities encompasses such strategies as participation in patient Quality and Safety Huddles in which safety events are presented and analyzed, and subsequent processes to enhance patient safety are planned. Within Penn PM&R, Franklin Caldera, DO, Associate Professor of Clinical Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Chief Medical Officer for the Penn Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine, is the physician leader for this Collaborative. The PM&R resident physicians on the team are Dr. Neil Batta and Dr. Mitra Daneshvar McLarney. Team members who function as quality managers from Good Shepherd Penn Partners include Patient Safety Manager Nina Renzi, Quality Assurance Manager Sonya Wood, and Clinical Psychologist Dr. Nora Johnson.
