Zheng, MD, Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation on the Academic Clinician track, and subspecialist in cancer rehabilitation, and Betty Chernack, MD, Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation on the Academic Clinician track, and subspecialist in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, have joined forces to develop a cancer rehabilitation fellowship to start as soon as July 2019. Dr. Zheng currently practices as an outpatient physiatrist at the Pennsylvania Hospital, and at the Perelman Center for Advance Medicine’s Abramson’s Cancer Center. Dr. Chernack currently practices as an inpatient consultation liaison physiatrist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and her hospice and palliative care duties include being the home hospice medical director for Penn Care at Home’s Chester County office, and inpatient palliative care consultation for Good Shepherd Penn Partners’ long term acute care hospital and the Penn Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine at the Penn Medicine Rittenhouse campus.

Randel Swanson headshotStephen Hampton headshotRandel Swanson II, DO, PhD, and Stephen Hampton, MD, both of whom are Assistant Professors of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation on the Clinical Educator track, and subspecialists in neurological rehabilitation, are now subspecialty certified in Brain Injury Medicine by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, after having successfully passed the brain injury medicine subspecialty board examination in 2018. Moreover, Dr. Swanson and Dr. Hampton were first and second co-authors, and Rosette Biester, PhD was another co-author, on one of “the most talked about articles of 2018” published in JAMA, ranking 6th among these 10 articles: Swanson, R.L., Hampton, S., Green-McKenzie, J., Diaz-Arresta, R., Grady, S., Verma, R., Biester, R., Duda, D., Wolf, R.L., Smith, D.H. Neurological manifestations among US government personnel reporting directional audible and sensory phenomena in Havana, Cuba. JAMA.doi:10.100/jama.2018.1742, published on line February 15, 2018. Dr. Swanson currently practices as an outpatient physiatrist, and basic science researcher, at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Philadelphia. Dr. Hampton currently practices as an inpatient physiatrist at the Penn Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine, and as an inpatient consultation liaison physiatrist at Penn Medicine’s Level I Trauma Center based at the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Biester is the neuropsychologist for the Veterans Integrated Network-4’s Polytrauma Network Site based at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Philadelphia.

Keith Robinson headshotDavid Lenrow headshotKeith M. Robinson, MD has been appointed Penn PM&R’s Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development. This newly created position within all academic departments at Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine focuses on providing guidance to junior faculty members as they progress toward promotion to Associate Professor in their respective academic tracks.

Moreover, Dr. Robinson was inducted into The Academy of Master Clinicians for 2018 within Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine, this being the highest honor among Penn Medicine clinicians. Dr. Robinson joins Penn PM&R’s Vice Chair for Education, David Lenrow, MD, JD who was inducted into The Academy of Master Clinicians in 2015. The Academy of Master Clinicians recognizes outstanding clinicians who are innovators and leaders in their specialties and who have an exceptional depth of knowledge. They are recognized as mentors, possessing exemplary communication and collaboration skills. Dr. Robinson currently is the Chief of Rehabilitation at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Philadelphia.

Adrian Popescu headshotAdrian Popescu, MD has been selected to join the newest class to participate in the Association of Academic Physiatrist’s Program for Academic Leadership. This program provides an opportunity to build leadership and administrative skills in academic environments. Dr. Popescu is currently practicing as an outpatient interventional spine and pain medicine specialist at the Penn Medicine Rittenhouse campus, and at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz Veterans Affairs Medical Center where he is the medical co-director of the chronic pain management program. Also, he is the fellowship director for Penn PM&R’s spine and sports musculoskeletal subspecialty fellowship program which is soon to be accredited by the North American Spine Society.

Mitra Deneshar McLarney, MD, MPH, a postgraduate level 2 resident in Penn PM&R’s residency training program, has been accepted into the Association of Academic Physiatrist’s Rehabilitation Medicine Scientist Training Program. This mentoring program is focused on the development of future scientific leaders in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Gregory Robbins, MD, previous Penn PM&R resident (2018 graduating class), also has been accepted into the Association of Academic Physiatrists Rehabilitation Medicine Scientific Training Program. Dr. Robbins is currently completing a Brain Injury Medicine fellowship at Harvard University based at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network in Boston, MA. He has been successfully recruited to return to Penn PM&R as an Instructor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation to start in the summer of 2019. He has been accepted into the Masters of Translational Research Program based within Penn’s Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (ITMAT). This program will groom Dr. Robbins to acquire essential skills necessary to pursue a career path as an academic physiatrist.
