Our knowledge of MS has evolved in recent years. Research conducted at academic medical centers, including Penn Medicine, continues to change how MS is understood and treated.
In a rapidly-changing treatment landscape, it's important to have access to the latest research and to be treated by specialists who thoroughly understand and apply that research. When you choose Penn Medicine, your treatment will be provided by pioneering neurologists.
The Penn MS and Related Disorders Center is committed to better understanding the causes of MS, its triggers, and its related disorders. Using this new knowledge, we are helping to pave the way for novel treatments and improved diagnostic tools that will enhance outcomes and quality of life for those living with these disorders.
There are many research studies currently taking place at the Penn MS and Related Disorders Center. Here are just a few:
- Lab-based immunology studies to better understand the causes of MS and how treatments affect the immune system. This will ultimately help to create new therapies for MS as well as a "personalized medicine" approach to MS care.
- Studies evaluating new MRI techniques and how they can be used to assess the changes that occur in MS. This will make it easier to diagnose MS and measure the efficacy of treatment.
- Trials evaluating the efficacy of new MS treatments
- Observational studies to understand the triggers for MS and how it evolves across the age-span
- Observational studies to understand related disorders such as NMO, MOG-associated demyelination, and genetically inherited white matter disorders
- Studies of advanced diagnostic tools for MS, including tests that may be performed on a device such as a tablet
