Urology conditions can interfere with the life you want to live. At Penn Medicine, our doctors provide complete care for female urology conditions like pelvic floor, bladder and urinary problems.
Urology Services for Women
Our urology specialists understand the sensitive nature of female urologic care. That's why we make your comfort a priority throughout your treatment. With our program, you benefit from:
Advanced bladder testing
Our state-of-the-art video urodynamics suite (VUDS) provides a highly detailed and accurate diagnosis for bladder and urinary conditions. VUDS combines X-Ray images with special pressure sensors to get a complete picture of bladder function. Our highly experienced VUDS technicians specialize in performing this test to ensure your comfort and the clearest results.
Nonsurgical incontinence, overactive bladder and pelvic organ prolapse treatment
We provide noninvasive options to treat issues with urination, including urinary incontinence, urge incontinence and overactive bladder (OAB) in females. We also specialize in pelvic organ prolapse (when the pelvic organs shift out of place).
Your needs and preferences are at the center of your treatment plan. Nonsurgical treatment options include:
- Pelvic floor muscle therapy and biofeedback: With this special training, your pelvic muscles gain strength and coordination. This treatment uses special sensors to show you how your muscles are working so you gain better muscle control.
- BOTOX® injections: Our urologists for women are experienced in treating OAB and urge incontinence with BOTOX®. Learn more about our Overactive Bladder Program.
- Percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS): This in-office procedure stimulates sacral nerves to treat OAB and urge incontinence. We use thin acupuncture-style needles to deliver mild electrical pulses into the nerves near your ankle.
Surgery for prolapse and incontinence
Our urologists for women perform the most advanced procedures for pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence, including minimally invasive options. Our range of pelvic floor dysfunction treatments offers you choices and peace of mind.
Surgical pelvic floor dysfunction treatment options include:
- Sling surgery: Our doctors are leaders in performing sling surgery to treat urinary incontinence. In this procedure, your surgeon makes small incisions in the vagina and bikini area to insert a mesh sling. The sling supports your urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body from the bladder). With proper urethra support, you gain better urinary control.
- Mesh-free autologous fascial sling: Our female urology surgeons also provide autologous fascial sling procedures, which don't use synthetic mesh. This surgery is an effective pelvic organ prolapse treatment that uses your own tissue. We collect some of your abdominal tissue and place it under the urethra in one procedure.
- Vaginal prolapse surgery: Our surgeons have special expertise in vaginal prolapse surgery with native tissue repair. This mesh-free surgery uses your own tissue to lift the uterus and correct prolapse. Doctors use a vaginal incision to insert the tissue so you can get back to your daily activities quickly.
- Robotic prolapse surgery: Our surgeons are skilled in minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic prolapse surgery. With these advanced techniques, we use smaller incisions so you recover faster. Learn more about our robotic urology surgery.
- Hysterectomy alternatives: At Penn, we believe women should choose whether a hysterectomy is right for them. We offer minimally invasive uterus-sparing procedures like robotic hysteropexy (uterine lift) for eligible patients. This procedure lifts and reinforces ligaments to hold the uterus up. Lifting the uterus provides an alternative to hysterectomy and has a faster recovery.
