In an effort to provide you with the best possible care before, during, and after surgery, the Department of Neurosurgery at Penn Medicine has introduced an evidence based approach to spine surgical care, called Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS).
Before your procedure, this pathway ensures that you are as healthy as possible going into surgery. You can also sign up to receive tips and reminders via text to guide you through your preparation for surgery.
During your hospital stay, your pain will be managed via a regimen that focuses on reducing the adverse effects of some medications, including opioids. You will be encouraged to take meals out of bed and walk as early as safely possible.
After surgery, you will be encouraged to follow up with your primary care provider on a regular basis, in addition to maintaining your care with the surgeon and any specialists that are involved in your care.
We believe that this pathway will not only improve your surgical experience, but also result in better outcomes after surgery. Watch the video to learn more!
