What Is Gynecologic Cancer?
Cancer starts when cells grow out of control, and it can develop anywhere in the body. Gynecologic cancers begin in a woman’s reproductive organs, which are in the pelvis, the area below the stomach.
Primary gynecologic cancer is cancer that starts growing in a woman’s reproductive organ. Metastatic, or secondary, gynecologic cancer starts elsewhere in the body and spreads (metastasizes) to a reproductive organ.
A woman’s reproductive organs include the:
- Cervix: The lower end of the uterus is a canal that connects to the vagina.
- Endometrium: The tissue that lines the uterus is where a fertilized egg implants itself and begins developing into a baby.
- Fallopian tubes: Eggs travel from each ovary to the uterus through a fallopian tube.
- Ovaries: This pair of organs produce eggs and hormones including estrogen.
- Uterus: This hollow, pear-shaped organ is where a baby grows.
- Vagina: This muscular canal connects the uterus to the outside of the body. The vagina allows for sexual intercourse, egg fertilization and delivery during childbirth.
- Vulva: This outer part of a woman’s genitals includes the labia (lips), clitoris and openings to the urethra and vagina.
