Message from the Chair

Franz Fogt, MDWelcome to the Department of Pathology at Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia. The Pennsylvania Hospital prides itself as the Nation’s first hospital that was established in 1751. In its rich history of over two centuries, the hospital has played a vital role in shaping health care in the entire country.

The department of Pathology has always played an integral part in the multidisciplinary value based and patient centric care in the era of evidence based personalized medicine. Our faculty with diverse expertise provides excellent diagnostic services in anatomic and clinical pathology. As part of the PennLabs under the University of Pennsylvania Health System, the department works in tandem with the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in both patient care, education and research.

The department offers a four year anatomic and clinical pathology residency program and surgical pathology fellowships that attract strong candidates from diverse backgrounds. We are proud of our trainees who achieve success in American Board of Pathology certification, secure outstanding fellowships and job placements in both community and academic settings.

As chair, my aim is to infuse the department with excitement and support as we continue on this journey of creating next generation pathologists. Our expert team offers crucial support and mentorship needed for success.

Our Department continues to grow and thrive in our mission of providing excellent diagnostic services, and outstanding training opportunities, by promoting personal and professional growth. Philadelphia, which we fondly call the “City of Brotherly Love” provides an ambience that is rich in history, culture, and fosters personal, social and professional growth.

I look forward to welcoming you to learn and grow with us. Please feel free to contact us for more information regarding our dynamic environment.

With best regards,

Franz Fogt, MD, PhD, MBA
