Residents who have identified a project and faculty mentor can apply in the spring of their CA-1 year for blocks of research time to be used in their CA-2 and CA-3 years. Projects range from retrospective chart reviews to basic neuroscience to translational research. The application process involves a small proposal which is reviewed competitively.

All residents awarded research elective time are expected to present their research at the annual Pennsylvania Anesthesiology Resident Research Conference (PARRC). Anesthesia residents from all training programs in Pennsylvania may submit abstracts for adjudicated oral and poster presentations. Residents from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Drexel University College of Medicine, Temple University School of Medicine, and Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania present at the conference.
