Penn’s Division of Hematology/Oncology reviews approximately 550 fellowship applications each year. From those applicants, we select approximately 60 candidates for interviews. The interviews are conducted on Fridays starting in late August through October of each year. We have slots for 8 incoming fellows each per year.

Additional Information on Application Requirements

  • Penn Hematology/Oncology uses the Electronic Residency Application program (ERAS) and participates in the National Resident Match Program (NRMP)
  • The division requires a personal statement as well as three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from the current residency program director
  • The division also requires submission via ERAS of USMLE scores 1, 2, and 3, the MSPE (Medical School Performance Evaluation), an updated curriculum vitae, and a personal statement
  • The division does sponsor applicants on a J1 or H1B Visa. Applicants must have current ECFMG certification

Interview season timeline: 

  • Applications will be accepted until August 5, 2023
  • Interviews will be virtual and will take place on Fridays in September and October
  • As per the NRMP, the rank order list submission deadline is the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving
  • As per the NRMP, Match Day is November 29th

Policy Statement for Applicants - Eligibility

To be eligible for a fellowship position in the Hematology/Oncology Division, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants must be a graduate of a U.S. or Canadian medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), or a college of osteopathic medicine that is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and will have successfully completed an accredited three-year internal medicine residency program or two years of an accredited internal medicine residency training program with the intention to participate in the ABIM Research Pathway ("short track") prior to the date on which his/her fellowship would begin.
  • If applicants are graduates of a program outside of North America they must meet one of the following qualifications:
    • Have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates
    • Have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a United States licensing jurisdiction
    • Be a graduate of a medical school outside the United States and have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school
