Penn Medicine’s Palliative Care Program is a national leader in palliative care, working to ease the burdens of those facing serious illness through outstanding clinical care, comprehensive educational programs, and innovative research. We are recognized nationally for our excellence in patient care, research, and training.

Our clinical program consists of robust inpatient teams at all six Penn Medicine hospitals, three thriving outpatient clinics for both oncology and non-oncology patients, and a strong home-based palliative care program. In addition, Penn Medicine Palliative Care partners with the award-winning Penn Medicine Hospice to ensure seamless transitions across settings and goals of care.

All of our faculty and staff are dedicated specialists who work to ease the physical, emotional, spiritual, and social impact of serious illness on individual and families. Our patients benefit from a team of experts who collaborate with a patient’s primary team to provide the best possible support in a patient- and family-centric environment, whether the care is provided in the hospital, in a clinic, or in the home.

In parallel to our clinical work, the Penn Palliative Care Program is also deeply committed to education and training. The program operates a competitive fellowship program and serves as a core teaching site for learners from medicine, nursing, social work, and chaplaincy. In addition, our Serious Illness Care Program has trained over 700 colleagues from across Penn Medicine – including the entirety of the Oncology Service Line – resulting in thousands of documented conversations to date about patients’ goals, values, and priorities.

We work collaboratively across the Penn Medicine health system to support leading research and innovation around palliative care. In addition to an ongoing partnership with the Palliative and Advanced Illness Research Center, we also work closely with teams from data science, the nudge unit, and precision medicine to design new and cutting-edge methods for delivering and measuring care. I invite you to browse our webpage and encourage you to learn more about our program.
