Research is a core part of training at Penn. The fellow is instructed in, and leads study design, data acquisition and analysis, and writing of abstracts and original research manuscripts. Fellows are encouraged and expected to present their work at national meetings and to submit manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication. Fellows have performed basic, translational or clinical research with mentors throughout Penn’s campus. For fellows interested in pursuing an independent research career, there is also an opportunity for an additional 3rd (and 4th) year of research training via a training grant.

A&I fellows at Penn have the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with leaders in the fields of immunology, immunodeficiency, autoimmunity, and allergic disease. Fellows also have the opportunity to work with researchers at the Penn Institute for Immunology (IFI) and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
