Jan-Karl Burkhardt, MD, is the newly appointed Chief of Cerebrovascular within the Department of Neurosurgery at Penn Medicine. Prior to being recruited to Penn, Dr. Burkhardt held faculty positions at the University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland and at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. At Baylor, he served as chief of the neurovascular service at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center and as co-director of the microneurosurgery lab.
Dr. Burkhardt completed neurosurgery residency training at the University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland, one of the world’s leading centers for cerebrovascular surgery, followed by a cerebrovascular surgery fellowship at UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco and a neuroendovascular surgery fellowship at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York.
Dr. Burkhardt’s clinical practice at Penn will focus solely on neurovascular disorders, including complex and previously treated vascular lesions, employing both open microsurgical and endovascular techniques. Conditions he sees include cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs), cavernous malformations, subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracranial hemorrhage, acute stroke, and chronic vessel stenosis or occlusion.
In addition, Dr. Burkhardt has unique expertise in cerebral revascularization with extracranial-intracranial bypass surgery for moyamoya disease and is actively engaged in research to better understand the pathogenesis of moyamoya disease.
