The main medical campus spans over 18 city blocks, and includes the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), The Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine outpatient care center, Penn Medicine University City ambulatory surgery facility, and multiple research buildings.
Our residency training takes place at three hospitals: The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC), and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
With more than 700 beds, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) is a major tertiary referral center for the mid-Atlantic and immediate Philadelphia region. More than 30,000 procedures, ranging from the routine to cardiothoracic and multi-organ transplantation surgery, are performed each year in the operating rooms at HUP. HUP is ranked as one of the top hospitals in the country. Patients recover after major procedures in the 54-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit, cared for by members of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care. It is adjacent to the University of Pennsylvania campus, and is attached to the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine — a state-of-the-art facility that contains the hospitals "surgi-center" — as well one of the most highly ranked medical schools in the country — the Perelman School of Medicine.

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), the first pediatric hospital in the United States, is a modern, 430-bed tertiary center located adjacent to HUP. Year after year CHOP is ranked as the top pediatric hospital in the United States, CHOP serves as the primary pediatric training facility for the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
Members of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care and the Department of Medicine's Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine manage 25,000 anesthetics annually in 21 operating rooms, a variety of ancillary locations, and direct the 66-bed multidisciplinary Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Penn Presbyterian Medical Center
Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC) is a 300+ bed hospital located less than 1 mile northwest of HUP. It has a long tradition of service to the surrounding community in West Philadelphia, and it provides an unique mix of "community practice" in an academic environment.
PPMC is a major orthopedic site in the Health System, and residents rotate there in order to expand this part of their practice, including regional blocks for both upper and lower limb orthopedic procedures. In 2015, PPMC became the Level 1 trauma center in the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Along with this transition, a new building (pavilion for advanced care) was built housing a new preoperative area, a new postoperative care unit, new intensive care units and several new operating rooms. PPMC is also the main site for the Penn Lung Rescue, a mobile extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) team that supports the surrounding region based in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care.
It is also the home to the residency program's internship.
Penn Medicine University City
Penn Medicine University City is a multispecialty center with a free standing facility with nearly 110 exam rooms, six outpatient operating rooms, and an outpatient medical imaging and diagnostic testing center. It is located across 38th street from Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Penn Musculoskeletal Center is housed at this location which provides a specialized approach to treating orthopedic disorderies, injuries and other conditions of the joints, bones and muscles. It provides a unified location for orthopedic surgery, rheumatology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, internal medicine, pain medicine and therapy/rehabilitation services.
PMUC provides residents additional experience in regional blocks for both upper and lower limb orthopedic procedures. For some of the orthopedic procedures, patients are sent home with a catheter in place for extended pain control. Residents place many of these catheters and followup with the patients the following day. Healthy ASA 1+2 and select ASA3 patients undergo ambulatory procedures here as well. The residents take on a junior attending role and have more exposure to working with CRNAs in a medical direction model.
Penn Medicine – Tuttleman
The Tuttleman Center offers primary care services, pain medicine and outpatient radiology. The ambulatory surgery facility for Pennsylvania Hospital is located here with eight operating rooms.
Residents rotate at Tuttleman where they spend their time on the outpatient pain service. The outpatient pain clinics are at this location and residents, fellows and attendings evaluate patients with chronic pain. This is also the location for the majority of pain procedures in the ambulatory surgery facility including diagnostic nerve blocks, therapeutic nerve blocks and spinal cord stimulators.
