This is a two-week block experience in which residents are immersed in their outpatient office practices in order to increase comfort and confidence with moving care forward in the ambulatory setting. The experience includes curriculum in telemedicine, ambulatory triage, urgent care, and panel management. Residents attend ILM didactics with their colleagues. In addition, there are opportunities to participate in enrichment clinics in such topics as addiction medicine, refugee health, women’s health, and gender-affirming care. This rotation gives residents a feel for what is really like to have outpatient careers and it has helped many residents refine their career interests.
Goals of the Rotation
- Increase comfort and competence with logistics of outpatient medical practice
- Foster interdisciplinary teamwork with practice staff to ensure safe, efficient, and effective care
- Expand ambulatory skills:
- Fine-tune history taking, exam and diagnostic skills with the goal of acquiring accurate and relevant information in a hypothesis-driven manner
- Solidify knowledge of essential guidelines and recommendations from national organizations (e.g. USPSTF) in order to provide appropriate preventive and evidence-based care
- Develop telemedicine skills – including telephone medicine and secure electronic messaging for triage and contingency planning
- Panel management to improve the care of patients at the practice and system level
