The Department of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania is committed to providing the highest quality of education and training to medical students, residents and fellows, practicing radiologists, undergraduates, graduate students, and post-doctoral research fellows interested in medical imaging. The undergraduate and graduate curriculum is co-organized with the Department of Bioengineering.
The curriculum is designed and implemented by over 100 accomplished, renowned basic science and clinical faculty, from both the Department of Radiology and Bioengineering, who participate in all aspects of education.
In the School of Medicine, our faculty and residents participate in the training of medical students from the gross anatomy lab through their fourth year with a Clinical Clerkship elective in Radiology (RA300).
The department sponsors two outstanding separate residency programs in association with its two academic hospitals. In addition to the traditional clinical track, two additional pathways — Research and Direct pathways — are offered.
We offer a one- or two-year fellowship in eight well-established clinical subspecialties, as well as multiple post-doctoral research fellowships in both basic and clinical disciplines. There are currently 34 clinical fellows and 25 post-doctoral fellows participating in various divisions within the department.
Undergraduate and graduate students interested in medical imaging have access to a wide range of courses in medical instrumentation, image analysis, and molecular imaging. PhD applicants have the option to apply to a unique Biomedical Imaging Science program sponsored by the Howard Hughes Foundation and National Institutes of Health (NIH), that involves concurrent coursework in medicine and the imaging sciences.
Finally, the Department's continuing medical education symposia in Philadelphia and elsewhere are attended annually by more than 1,000 radiologists from around the country.
