Radiology is one of the most competitive specialties for residency training. Penn Medicine offers comprehensive radiology training in an engaging and nurturing environment in a quaternary care setting.
Applications to our training program are made through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System). The deadline for receiving your completed DR residency and/or Integrated IR residency application through ERAS is October 15, 2024. The Independent IR residency application process follows the radiology subspecialty match timeline. We require completion of one year of ACGME-accredited clinical training prior to beginning radiology residency training. You should apply for these internships, typically done in internal medicine, surgery or as a transitional year, independently through ERAS.
Candidates for residencies are considered during their fourth year of medical school and less often during or after their internship. Our positions are filled through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).
The Department of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania does not discriminate based on age, race, national origin, gender, or sexual orientation. There is no cutoff based on a candidate's age, USMLE scores, or date of graduation from medical school. We have current residents who have trained both in the United States and internationally. We support residents with either an H1-B or J1 visa for the Diagnostic Radiology-Clinical Track, Interventional Radiology-Integrated and Interventional Radiology-Independent residency programs. Application to the Diagnostic Radiology-Research track is open to US citizens and/or permanent residents (Green Card) applicants only, as it is partially funded by the NIH.
All applicants must meet the requirements to obtain a Pennsylvania Medical Training License to enter our ACGME accredited program. USMLE Step 2 is encouraged, but not required.
Radiology Main Residency Match
We typically receive over 800 applications for our residency positions:
- Ten positions are in our Diagnostic Radiology - Clinical Track (1628420A0)
- Three positions are designated for the Diagnostic Radiology - Research Track (1628420A1)
- Four positions are in our Interventional Radiology – Integrated Program (1628416A0).
You may apply to one or all of the tracks/programs, depending on your career goals.
Recruitment 2024-2025 Update
ERAS applications will be accepted as of September 4, 2024. We will begin reviewing applications on September 25, 2024.
Meet our Leadership Team
Penn Radiology has elected to participate in the supplemental ERAS application.
Applicants (MD, DO, and international graduates) applying to our residency programs in Diagnostic Radiology or Interventional Radiology - Integrated are eligible and strongly encouraged to complete the supplemental ERAS application, though it is optional.
The supplemental ERAS application is being offered by the AAMC, which features questions that will help applicants showcase their interests and experiences to our programs. This information will help us better understand how applicants’ interests and experiences align with our program environment, mission, and goals.
The supplemental application is separate and distinct from the standard MyERAS application. Your participation in the supplemental application is optional. It will be administered online and consists of three sections:
- Past Experiences
- Geographic Preferences
- Program Signal
USMLE Step 2 is encouraged, but not required.
Invitations to interview will be sent out from Thalamus on Friday, October 11th. Applicants will receive advance notice of opportunity to schedule interviews through the ERAS scheduler.
We will conduct all virtual interviews in the afternoons (EST) on Zoom beginning October 30, 2024 through January 2025.
A virtual “meet and greet” will be held for candidates with our current residents the evening prior to your interview.
We will offer all candidates a “second look” at the program in February 2025 after we post our NRMP rank list. This opportunity is strictly for the benefit of the candidate, and it will not impact our rank list.

Interventional Radiology - Independent Residency Match
The Interventional Radiology - Independent Residency program (NRMP Code: 1628415F0) will follow the NRMP Specialty Match for the June Match. Applicants will apply through ERAS during the December cycle and interviews will be conducted between February and March each year.
All ESIR candidates will be required to submit ESIR training verification documents with their ERAS application. ESIR applicants must use the APDIR standardized letter template in their application, which requires diagnostic radiology program directors to include ESIR verification documents as part of their letter of recommendation.
Sections in the new letter template include:
- Applicant and program director data
- Diagnostic radiology program director letter of recommendation
- Block training diagram for R1-R4 years
- Diagnostic radiology program director ESIR acceptance statement
