Dr. Yoshiko Toyoda is a rising chief resident in the Penn Plastic Surgery integrated residency. While she enjoys all aspects of plastic surgery, she is particularly interested in upper and lower extremity reconstruction. She will be pursuing a hand and microvascular fellowship at the Mayo Clinic after graduating from residency.

Research

During medical school Dr. Yoshiko Toyoda conducted research under Dr. Jason Spector (Weill Cornell Medicine) in a tissue engineering lab for five years. During her dedicated research year through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute fellowship, she studied the interaction between breast cancer cells and adipocytes in a collagen-based, patient-specific biomimetic platform which emulated breast tissue. She also examined the effect of Medicaid coverage on breast cancer screening, treatment, and reconstruction. Since residency, she had been involved in a wide range of clinical research projects, including examining cosmetic filler injection in the tear trough; prognosis of neuropathic pain after nerve pedicle manipulation in amputees; outcomes in children with upper extremity vascular anomalies; and physiologic effects of performing thoracic duct lymphovenous anastomosis.
