The Residency in Urology at the University of Pennsylvania consists of a five year program with rotations at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and the following affiliated hospitals: Pennsylvania Hospital (PAH), the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center (PVAMC), the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC). Our residents compliment is four per year. There is a 6 year option for a single resident per year with a dedicated year of research between PGY3 and PGY4.


Rotations, generally of three months duration, are arranged to ultimately provide each resident with a total of twelve months of adult urology chief residency and three months of pediatric urology chief residency.

To satisfy the requirements of the American Board of Urology, one of a variety of configurations of post-graduate training must be completed prior to the clinical urology residency. Our configuration for the 5 year program is as follows:

PGY – 1

  • 3 months of Urology at HUP
  • 3 months Urology at PPMC
  • 6 months of General Surgery

PGY – 2

  • 3 months at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
  • 3 months at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
  • 3 months at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center
  • 3 months at Pennsylvania Hospital

PGY – 3

  • 3 months at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (in and out-patient surgery)
  • 3 months as in patient and ER Clinic Resident at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
  • 3 months at Penn Presbyterian Hospital
  • 3 months at Pennsylvania Hospital

PGY – 4

  • 3 months at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
  • 3 months as Consult Resident at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
  • 3 months at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia as chief resident
  • 3 months at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center

PGY – 5: chief resident

  • 3 months at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
  • 3 months at Penn Presbyterian Hospital
  • 3 months at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center
  • 3 months at Pennsylvania Hospital

The mission of the Division of Urology is to pursue and achieve excellence in all areas of the care of the patient with urologic disease or injury; to educate the next generation of urologists with the most current medical knowledge regarding the understanding, detection, treatment and prevention of urologic disease, and to enable them to choose and use with proficiency the latest technical advances in the field;  and to expand urologic knowledge through a culture of research and discovery by fostering the development of new concepts and of future leaders in the field.
