Number of fellows: Two positions (one fellow in the field of family medicine, internal medicine, or emergency medicine, and one fellow in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation).

The current structure of the primary care sports medicine fellowship encompasses longitudinal curricular experiences with our sports medicine faculty in various settings, and also provides fellows the opportunity to engage in teaching experiences. The curriculum provides a foundation for fellows in good standing to be prepared to sit for the CAQ exam at the end of the year.
Clinical Curriculum
- Division I Athletic Coverage: The fellow will serve as a team physician for the University of Pennsylvania, a Division I athletic program with over 30 varsity sports.
- Professional Sports:
- National Hockey League (NHL) experience through Gary Dorshimer, MD, FACP, FCPP, CAQSM, who serves as Head Team Physician for the Philadelphia Flyers.
- National Football League (NFL) experience through Arsh Dhanota, MD, CAQSM, who serves as Chief Medical Officer & Head Team Physician for the Philadelphia Eagles (currently only those trained in FM, IM, or EM).
- National Basketball League (NBA) experience through Milt Zgonis, MD, who serves as Head Team Physician and Lead Orthopedic Surgeon, and Arsh Dhanota, MD, who serves as Lead Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician, for the Philadelphia 76ers.
- Major League Soccer (MLS) experience through John Vasudevan, MD, who serves as a Team Physician for the Philadelphia Union.
- Pediatric Sports Medicine Training at CHOP: The fellow will have significant time with non-operative sports medicine faculty and comprehensive concussion management training at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
- Mass Participation Events: The fellow will serve as an associate medical director for events such as the Penn Relays Track and Field Carnival, Philadelphia Love Run Half Marathon, and Broad Street Marathon.
- The fellow will have time and exposure with multiple specialists in a longitudinal format over the course of the year, including:
- Musculoskeletal ultrasound with MSK U/S specialists, including PRP injections and Tenex procedures
- Non-operative spine care with our PMR sports medicine faculty
- Foot and ankle surgery
- Hand surgery
- Hip surgery
- Each fellow will also spend at least ½ day in their primary specialty each week
- Fellows also have the option to participate in a diversity of electives, including, but not limited to musculoskeletal radiology, sports cardiology, sports nutrition, physical therapy, etc.
Didactics
- Sports Medicine Conference
- Sports medicine conference is held weekly at 6:15am on Wednesday mornings, and is attended by PCSM faculty, Orthopedic Sports Medicine faculty, PCSM and Orthopedic sports medicine fellows. Topics are presented by PCSM and Orthopedics sports medicine faculty and fellows, and cover the full range of musculoskeletal conditions, including orthopedic and radiology cases.
- Musculoskeletal ultrasound workshop
- Fellows will have the opportunity to get hands-on training with ultrasound-trained sports medicine faculty to diagnose MSK disorders and for ultrasound-guided injection learning. Fellows are provided readings prior to the workshops, and ultrasound videos to reference on the AMSSM website.
- Teaching opportunities
- Fellows are given the option to lead sports medicine workshops, and give lectures to medical students and residents in their respective primary fields.
- Research and Scholarly Activity
- Fellows are required to complete at least 1 research or scholarly activity during fellowship year, which may include a clinical case write up, article submission, or research paper. They are encouraged to present at the national conference. Support is provided at the institutional level for fellows to accomplish their scope of work.
