To My Colleagues,

It is my unique honor to present the latest edition of Excellence in Motion, the newsletter of the Department of Orthopaedics at Penn Medicine.

This issue highlights examples of the clinicians, researchers, and administrators at Penn Orthopaedics pursuing the best cutting edge treatment paradigms for each patient – both for the present and for the future.

  • As part of our mission to provide the best care for our community, Penn Orthopaedics has a long history of collaboration in the care of patients at Veterans Affairs, working to address the unique needs of our wounded warriors. In this article, we discuss some of the advanced treatments that we offer veterans, as well as opportunities for research that Penn and the VA will be conducting together through their shared resources.
  • I am pleased to share with you the incredible research being conducted in the Mourkioti Lab – part of the McKay Orthopaedic Research Laboratory here at Penn Orthopaedics, and the recent recipient of a grant from NASA. This work has the goal of uncovering the mechanisms behind the replication of telomeres (caps of DNA at the end of chromosomes) and their possible implications on novel new treatment paradigms for muscle disorders.
  • Finally, we highlight the complex work of our department administrators, helping Penn Orthopaedic surgeons deliver orthopaedic services more safely, more efficiently, and with more accessibility. With initiatives ranging from the significant reduction of opioid usage to the coordination of the several departments that make up the Penn Musculoskeletal and Rheumatology Service Line, they work with our clinicians in our pursuit of "what’s possible."

Penn Orthopaedics remains at the vanguard of advanced clinical care – enhancing patient quality of life as well as doing this safely, with Patient-reported outcomes validating our approach. I look forward to sharing further highlights with you in the future.

Regards,
L. Scott Levin, MD, FACS
