To My Colleagues,

It is my unique honor to present the latest edition of Excellence in Motion, the newsletter of the Department of Orthopaedics at Penn Medicine.

This year has presented many challenges, and this issue highlights examples of the clinicians, researchers, and administrators at Penn Orthopaedics overcoming the challenges of this year and continuing to advance our three missions: research, education, and clinical excellence.

• COVID-19 has been the challenge of a generation – and the Penn Orthopaedics team has shown it was up to the task. Recently, we spoke at length to three department leaders about the challenges faced before and immediately after the Department’s return to surgery, and what the road ahead looks like.
• Chris Anthony, MD is the newly appointed Associate Director of the Penn Hip Preservation Center. A former professional football player, Dr. Anthony has a unique insight into patient care for athletes and active adults that has informed his practice. Here we detail how he and the rest of the Penn Hip Preservation team will drive the growth of this unique center designed to help active adults of all ages who are hindered by a hip disorder.
• Adding to the incredible research being conducted at Penn Orthopaedics, Hannah Lee, MD, PhD has joined us as a hand and wrist surgeon and researcher. With a particular focus on “bench to bedside” translational research, Dr. Lee shares her journey from her PhD training in bioengineering to her current efforts in musculoskeletal and nerve regeneration research.
• J. Gabe Horneff III, MD, FAAOS is a Penn Alumnus and now a member of the Penn Orthopaedics Shoulder and Elbow program faculty. In this article, Dr. Horneff shares how the lessons of his education at University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine have influenced his practice now as a penn faculty member, and highlights the unique benefits of how Penn facilitates developing relationships both within and beyond the parameters of curriculum.

I am immensely proud of what the Penn Orthopeadics team has accomplished under these uniquely difficult circumstances – with sustained commitments to advancing patient care, research, and education – and I look forward to sharing further highlights with you in the future.
