Purpose Statement

The PGY2 Ambulatory Care pharmacy residency program at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in the specialized area of ambulatory care clinical practice. The PGY2 residency at PPMC provides residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating patient care in advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete a PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification.

Program Overview

The PGY2 Ambulatory Care pharmacy residency program at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center will facilitate the development and growth of the resident to practice as an independent practitioner as well as work as part of a multidisciplinary team to optimize clinical outcomes. Throughout the residency year, the resident will expand their skillset in a variety of therapeutic areas through rotations offered in a multitude of specialty practices.

Upon completion of the PGY2 Ambulatory Care pharmacy residency the resident will:

  • Provide high-quality, evidence-based recommendations to optimize medication therapy regimens to a multidisciplinary team in ambulatory care settings.
  • Demonstrate advanced skills as an educational resource in drug information for healthcare professionals. (via formal presentations, consultations, etc.).
  • Exhibit skills for leading the development and/or enhancement of clinical pharmacy services in ambulatory care settings.
  • Be prepared for a variety of specialized positions within ambulatory care settings.
  • Be qualified for certification as a Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist (BCACP).

    • Options: Rheumatology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonary, Dermatology, Hematology/Oncology

Elective Rotations

  • Repeat of any core rotation or specialty area not previously selected
  • Repeat rotations will aim to build knowledge in additional disease states (e.g. Endocrinology core rotation focusing on management of diabetes; Endocrinology repeat elective focusing on osteoporosis)

Longitudinal Rotations

  • Chronic Disease Management (Penn Family Care) – 4-hour session/week (September – December)
  • Transitions in Care (Penn Family Care) – 4-hour session/week (January – June)
  • Outpatient Pharmacy Staffing (rotation through PPMC outpatient pharmacies) - 4-hour session/week (August – June)
  • Longitudinal Committees

Educational Opportunities

  • One ACPE-accredited continuing education presentation
  • One formal case conference
  • Two formal journal club presentations
  • One mini-topic series presentation as part of the Pharmacy Education initiative
  • Ambulatory Care Topic Discussion Conference every 1-2 months for approximately 6 months
  • Interdisciplinary in-services as needed
  • Precepting for IPPE/APPE/PGY1 pharmacy residents
