Purpose Statement

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

Penn Medicine Infectious Diseases

Program Overview

The PGY-2 Infectious Diseases (ID) Pharmacy residency program at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center will facilitate the development and growth of the resident to practice as both an independent practitioner as well as part of an inter-disciplinary team to provide safe and effective patient care with a specialized focus in infectious diseases. Throughout the residency year the resident will expand their knowledge base with regards to interpretation of microbiological culture and susceptibility results, antimicrobial pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, antimicrobial stewardship and infectious diseases related research.

Upon completion of the PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency the resident will:

  • Provide evidence-based, patient centered medication therapy regimens by providing recommendations for the most appropriate antimicrobial therapy for patients through the Antimicrobial Stewardship program and as a part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Promote appropriate utilization of antimicrobials to ensure safe medication use and optimize stewardship practices to provide the optimal therapy for patients
  • Act as an educational resource for health-care providers and pharmacy staff to optimize patient’s antimicrobial therapy in patients with acute or chronic Infectious Diseases related conditions
  • Exhibit the necessary leadership and communication skills required to provide recommendations to practice as an Infectious Diseases Clinical Pharmacy Specialist
  • Interpret and analyze various microbiological processes and testing methods to promote a collaborative role between the microbiology team and infectious diseases clinical pharmacy specialist to improve patient care and clinical outcomes
