Penn Presbyterian Medical Center PGY-2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency
Purpose Statement
The PGY2 Emergency Medicine pharmacy residency program at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC) builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in the specialized area of Emergency Medicine clinical practice. The PGY2 Emergency Medicine residency at PPMC provides residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge, incorporating both into the provision of patient care or into other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete this PGY2 pharmacy residency will be prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification.
Program Overview
Based on the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) standards for PGY-2 training in Emergency Medicine, our program provides a well-rounded residency experience with an emphasis on clinical excellence and compassionate care through direct patient care, collaborative research, interdisciplinary education, medication safety, and guideline/policy optimization.
The PGY2 Emergency Medicine pharmacy residency program at PPMC is designed to build upon prior training to develop skilled clinical pharmacists in the specialized area of Emergency Medicine. The PGY2 residency at PPMC is designed to take advantage of unique opportunities through association with the University of Pennsylvania Health System. PPMC houses a 36-bed emergency department and is the site of the Level 1 Trauma Center for Penn Medicine. Penn Presbyterian is a critical resource for the community of West Philadelphia and the region, allowing for the exposure of PGY2 Emergency Medicine residents to a unique breadth and depth of clinical experiences. These experiences, in combination with strong mentorship and a focus on clinician well-being, assist residents in the development of the knowledgebase, practice style, and professional identity that is necessary to transition into a variety of roles upon successful completion of the program.
