Every year a large cohort of Penn Radiology residents attend national radiology meetings including the RSNA and SIR Annual meetings, as well as numerous subspecialty annual meetings, such as ASNR, AUR, CIO, SAR, SIO, SPIE and SIIM. The program fully supports residents to attend essentially an unlimited number of conferences at which they present abstracts and/or posters. In 2022-2023, 34 residents presented abstracts or posters at 35 different meetings!

Penn Radiology at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Annual Meeting 2023

Another successful RSNA in the books for Penn Radiology in 2023! Five residents presented this year in Chicago, including R2 Audrey Rich who presented her cutting-edge research on how Ultra-high-resolution photon-counting CT results in improved spatial accuracy during simulated coronary motion.

Three Penn residents, Hwan Lee, Hossein Nejadnik and Monica Matsumoto were honored as grant recipients and award winners for Leadership in Radiology during this year’s conference. There were even presentations from several incoming Penn residents who managed to find time to do research during their intern years.

It was great to see Penn Alumni, current residents and future residents come together for the annual Penn Alumni reception. As our incoming T32 research track resident Bahram Mohajer put it on Twitter/X, “#family” indeed!

American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) Annual Meeting 2023

The 2023 ARRS meeting was held in Honolulu, Hawaii and featured a variety of interesting talks encompassing primary research, educational/didactic-style review lectures, and departmental/practice-management issues.

One particular area of emphasis was radiologist wellness, with multiple presentations and panel discussions on wellness challenges and potential solutions from both the attending and trainee perspectives.

Penn Radiology was well represented, with several trainees and faculty members giving presentations. We also had a great time getting together outside the conference and enjoying the beautiful city of Honolulu.

Dr. Vineeth Gangaram gave an exciting talk about self-supervised learning in Radiology.

American College of Radiology (ACR) Annual Meeting

The ACR annual meeting was held May 6th-10th, in Washington, D.C. and several Penn Residents made the trip to attend. Fatima Elahi, our new R4 resident, is the ACR Advocacy Liaison for the Resident and Fellow Executive Committee, and Chantal Chahine a current R2 was one of three Pennsylvania Radiologic Society Resident Representatives.

The leadership conference included updating current practice guidelines, Medicaid/Medicare reimbursements, management strategies, Resident/Fellow elections, and a lecture by Dr. Glaucomflecken himself.

Lastly, our group went to Capitol Hill to meet Senators Fetterman and Casey, and Representatives Evans and Scanlon to advocate to our legislators on behalf of our patients and profession. Everyone had a great time, and we hope more residents attend ACR in 2024.

Audrey Rich and Chantal Chahine stopped by Senator John Fetterman’s office while visiting Capitol Hill.

Penn Radiology at the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) Annual Meeting (2023)

Penn Interventional Radiology had a terrific representation at the Society of Interventional Radiology Annual Meeting in Phoenix, AZ on March 4-9th. Our trainees gave seven oral scientific presentations and 4 poster exhibits on topics ranging from lymphatics and interventional oncology to IR education and quality improvement. Several of these exciting projects were from work at the Penn Image Guided Interventions (PIGI) Laboratory, a nationally and internally recognized IR translational research laboratory.

Our chief IR resident, Dr. Dan DePietro, also gave an invited lecture on neuroendocrine tumor management. One of our current IR2s, Dr. Monica Matsumoto, also co-led the Global IR Juniors Summit held on March 5th, which was a trainee-organized hybrid in-person and remote symposium highlighting IR efforts around the world, including in underserved regions.

Both residents and attendings were able to take advantage of networking events, like the Women in Interventional Luncheon and the PIGI lab dinner, as well as enjoy some time exploring around the city and hiking!

Penn Radiology at the Society of Interventional Oncology (SIO) Annual Meeting 2024

Four residents attended the Society of Interventional Oncology Annual Meeting in Long Beach, CA from January 25-29.

R2 Dr. Alexey Gurevich presented an exciting, late-breaking abstract featuring recent data from the PIGI lab on the benefits of a Liquid Embolic. R4 Julia D'Souza attended as a current Resident Co-Chair of the SIO Resident and Medical Student Section and presented results of the Initial Outcomes of Integrating Yttrium-90 Radioembolization with Capecitabine Temozolomide for Grade 3 Liver-Dominant Metastatic Neuroendocrine Tumors. Current R3 Residents Elise Seyferth and Jacy Lundberg received scholarships to attend SIO 2024 through the IO Essentials program. A fantastic set of talks and other programming aimed at helping early career IRs network with peers and leaders in the field of Interventional oncology, learn about the newest techniques and data and interact with industry representatives. Several Penn Faculty and Alum rounded out the group representing Penn this year in Long Beach, CA at SIO 2024!

Penn Radiology at the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE) Annual Meeting 2023

Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe is the largest and well known interventional radiology conference in Europe. Internationally renowned IR physicians from around the world all gather every September to discuss exciting new innovations in the realm of minimally invasive interventions, creating an annual meeting with a consistently impressive turn out.

Usually the meeting is held in a variety of large cities in Western Europe, this year being hosted in Copenhagen, Denmark. The conference was packed with participants ranging from medical device companies, attendings, fellows, residents, medical students, researchers, etc. The content was broad and impressively innovative ranging from modern lymphatic interventions, to cutting edge oncologic work, to efficient new strategies in stroke management, etc. The conference was especially comprehensive in that there were a variety of vendors broadcasting innovations and allowing practitioners to gain hands on training in learning new devices for a variety of interventional purposes. Penn Medicine came out to represent out institution with an array of posters, presentations including an innovative session on lymphatic interventions by our academically prolific resident Alexey Gurevich (IR2), and even a special opportunity to moderate a pediatric interventional radiology session by resident Monica Matsumoto (IR3).

Pictured from Left to Right: Dr. Monica Matsumoto (IR3) having the special opportunity to serve as a moderator for a pediatric interventional radiology session. The youngest doctor to give her expertise in this realm

Pictured from Left to Right: Dr. Alexey Gurevich (IR2) who is a prolific researcher giving a lecture on modern lymphatic interventions to a room full of international experts in interventional radiology. Multiple participants went up to ask questions eagerly.

The conference itself was extremely informative; however, having the opportunity explore the modern society of Copenhagen was special. From the incredible locally sourced food prepared with modern techniques, to the incredibly beautiful and varied neighborhoods, to the safe and structured culture of cycling, Copenhagen is a truly unique city. We were given the chance to explore old structures such as Rosenborg Castle, experience the true sea-faring culture in Nyhavn, and bike around to a variety of diverse neighborhoods including Freetown Christiana. We all celebrated our last night enjoying a wonderful traditional Danish meal at Restaurant 1733 in Copenhagen.
