Penn Radiology at the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE) Annual Meeting 2023
Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe is the largest and well known interventional radiology conference in Europe. Internationally renowned IR physicians from around the world all gather every September to discuss exciting new innovations in the realm of minimally invasive interventions, creating an annual meeting with a consistently impressive turn out.
Usually the meeting is held in a variety of large cities in Western Europe, this year being hosted in Copenhagen, Denmark. The conference was packed with participants ranging from medical device companies, attendings, fellows, residents, medical students, researchers, etc. The content was broad and impressively innovative ranging from modern lymphatic interventions, to cutting edge oncologic work, to efficient new strategies in stroke management, etc. The conference was especially comprehensive in that there were a variety of vendors broadcasting innovations and allowing practitioners to gain hands on training in learning new devices for a variety of interventional purposes. Penn Medicine came out to represent out institution with an array of posters, presentations including an innovative session on lymphatic interventions by our academically prolific resident Alexey Gurevich (IR2), and even a special opportunity to moderate a pediatric interventional radiology session by resident Monica Matsumoto (IR3).

The conference itself was extremely informative; however, having the opportunity explore the modern society of Copenhagen was special. From the incredible locally sourced food prepared with modern techniques, to the incredibly beautiful and varied neighborhoods, to the safe and structured culture of cycling, Copenhagen is a truly unique city. We were given the chance to explore old structures such as Rosenborg Castle, experience the true sea-faring culture in Nyhavn, and bike around to a variety of diverse neighborhoods including Freetown Christiana. We all celebrated our last night enjoying a wonderful traditional Danish meal at Restaurant 1733 in Copenhagen.
