Medical Affairs and the GME require that we have a Credentialing process covering the independent insertion of central venous lines, bronchoscopes, and chest tubes. You must compile the record necessary to be credentialed as an independent inserter. Our detailed Department policy is below.
CY-1 and CY-2 housestaff are NOT credentialed until ALL of the following have taken place:
- The resident has successfully inserted at least 10 central venous catheters, under the DIRECT supervision of a physician who has previously been certified as an independent inserter.
- The resident has successfully removed at least 2 central venous catheters, under the DIRECT supervision of a physician who has previously been certified as an independent inserter.
- The resident has successfully completed 5 bronchoscopes under the DIRECT supervision of a senior resident and/or faculty member.
- The resident has successfully inserted at least 5 chest tubes under the DIRECT supervision of a senior resident and/or faculty member.
- The COMPLETE record of the above has been entered into MedHub.
