Discipline Policy
Specific to Department of Surgery
Unfavorable performance appraisals may occur in response to a variety of events:
inadequate academic performance, e.g., substandard performance on an in-training examination
inadequate clinical care, e.g., a breach of Hospital clinical care standards
appropriate conduct, e.g., violation of Hospital or Departmental policies
adverse annual review (by the Education Committee or Program Director)
adverse clinical performance evaluation.
The Program Director is responsible for enacting all disciplinary measures of Department of Surgery residents. Following a review of all pertinent facts, the Program Director will decide an appropriate course of action and will communicate in writing to the resident, Faculty Advisor, Chairman, and DIO. If warranted, professional counseling, medical evaluation or a leave of absence may be suggested or required.
Within 30 days of disciplinary action, a resident may appeal by addressing a written statement to the chair of the Graduate Medical Education Committee in accordance with the
GME policy
(internal only)
