About Dr. Rosen

Claire is a chief resident in general surgery at Penn pursuing a career in minimally invasive elective and emergency general surgery, with an academic focus on teaching and investigating medical ethics within surgical practice and training, surgical decision making, and patient-centered care. Claire earned her Master of Science in Medical Ethics under the primary mentorship of Dr. Rachel Kelz while in the lab, and her research focused on the intersection between medical ethics and surgical care delivery. She graduated with honors from the Johns Hopkins University in December of 2013 with a BA in Public Health. She earned her MD from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in May of 2018.

Research

Penn Center for Surgery and Health Economics and Palliative and Advanced Illness Research Center
Primary Mentor: Rachel R. Kelz, MD MSCE MBA
Additional Mentors: Scott Halpern, MD PhD, Margaret (Gretchen) Schwarze, MD MPP, Justin Clapp, PhD, Luke Keele, PhD, Elinore Kaufman, MD MSHP
Research focus: The intersection between medical ethics and surgical care delivery.
Funding: F32 training grant from the NIH, National Institute on Aging
Projects: Projects range from quantitative, national studies to examine longitudinal outcomes of older, emergency surgery patients to qualitative studies of surgeon practice behaviors. Each project was designed to deliver new data to practicing physicians, and patients, that considered patient independence as a critical outcome of surgical management of older adults. In addition to her academic pursuits, Claire led a team to develop a bedside app to translate her quantitative work into a usable format for clinicians. Her publications included a featured article in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons and a podcast interview on the Operative Word.

The University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center
Primary Mentor: Deborah Stein, MD MPH
Additional Mentors: Thomas Scalea, MD
Funding: Grant Funding for Student Research, The Proposed Research Initiated by Students and Mentors (PRISM) Program, University of Maryland School of Medicine
Projects: Projects ranged from retrospective studies on mild traumatic brain injury and the routine use of repeat head CT and triage of vascular acute care surgery to the clinical study on the use of airway pressure release ventilation (APRV) in patients with severe traumatic brain injury
