About Dr. Simons

Russell is a PGY3 categorical general surgery resident. He grew up in Larchmont, NY and received his B.S. in Biology magna cum laude from Boston College as a Gabelli Presidential Scholar, his M.P.H. in health policy from Harvard University, and his M.D. from the University of Chicago where he was elected to membership in Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA).

Russell’s clinical interests currently include surgical oncology and trauma & acute care surgery. His most recent research focuses on the intersections between COVID-19 health policy, medical ethics, and social justice, and he regularly mentors students who share his academic interests and/or his identity as an LGBTQ+ person in medicine. A recipient of the 2022 U.S. Public Health Service Excellence in Public Health Award, Russell is fiercely passionate about promoting health equity and hopes to use his interdisciplinary training to influence state & federal policymaking.

As a medical student, Russell worked at Human Rights Watch where he investigated human rights concerns related to the opioid epidemic, the development of universal health coverage systems, and HIV/AIDS care for transgender women. While at Harvard, Russell worked as a Public Health Fellow in the office of Massachusetts state senator Jo Comerford. There, he drafted legislation to establish a system for promoting heath equity in policy decisions across state government. He was also selected as the student speaker for his graduating class, delivering a speech entitled “Politics are Public Health, Social Change is Medicine.”
