"I am delighted to write this letter commending Ahmara Ross, MD, PhD, for the outstanding medical care she has provided me over the past [few years], while I have been under her care for Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION) and ocular hypertension.
From the start, I have greatly appreciated Dr. Ross’ authoritative expertise in ophthalmology and neuro-ophthalmology – combined with her caring and patient manner. Dr. Ross always gave clear and careful explanations.
Why I am especially grateful to Dr. Ross: Prior to a routine appointment with Dr. Ross, this past Spring, I had been experiencing progressively worsening problems with walking and balance. At this appointment, my wife asked Dr. Ross if these problems were related to the NAION. After some further discussion of my symptoms, which were not (apparently) ophthalmological, Dr. Ross advised me that I may have Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) and directed me to follow up with a general neurologist. Indeed, Dr. Ross was correct. After I consulted with general neurology and neurosurgery, I was extremely fortunate to be able to have neurosurgery (performed by Dr. Daniel Yoshor of Penn Medicine) to install a shunt. By the time of the surgery I could barely walk, and my improvement since the surgery has been dramatic.
If not for Dr. Ross taking the time to carefully listen to me, and if not for her then immediately connecting my symptoms to NPH, I may have ended up waiting considerably longer before eventually obtaining effective treatment.
I continue to see Dr. Ross to monitor the NAION and high ocular pressure. Both conditions are currently stable.
