The Scheie Eye Institute is thrilled to welcome Matthew Santos, MD, who joined our faculty in August 2024 as Assistant Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology.

Dr. Santos is a native Rhode Islander, having completed his undergraduate degrees in English and Biology at Providence College before medical school at Brown University. During his summer and winter breaks in college, Dr. Santos worked as an ophthalmic technician, witnessing the impact these eye surgeons made on the lives of their patients. While in medical school, Dr. Santos was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha and the Gold Humanism Honor Societies. Afterward, he completed his ophthalmology residency at Washington University in St. Louis where he received awards recognizing excellence in medical student education, resident research, clinical and surgical excellence, and the Ron Burde “Good Egg” Award – a peer-selected award for helping his co-residents.

Following residency, Dr. Santos served as the Chief of Ophthalmic Trauma at Washington University for a year, staffing the consult service, cataract and trauma surgery for the residents. He then completed a fellowship in Cornea and External Disease at Wills Eye Hospital in 2023-2024.

Dr. Santos is excited to join the collegial team of clinicians and researchers at Scheie. He is a passionate educator and looks forward to meaningfully contributing to the educational experiences of medical students and residents.

Dr. Santos will be seeing cornea, cataract, and comprehensive patients at the Scheie and Media locations. He will also be seeing patients and staffing residents at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center. At the VA, he will be staffing in both the clinic and the operating room.

Dr. Santos will soon be moving to Swarthmore, PA with his family. He enjoys spending quality time exploring the city and its surroundings on long family walks with his wife, toddler son, and their rescue cattle dog.
