The Scheie Eye Institute is delighted to welcome back Tomas Meijome, MD, MS, who has joined our faculty as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology. Dr. Meijome graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and completed his Ophthalmology residency training at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center. He further honed his expertise by completing a fellowship in Global Ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia.
Dr. Meijome provides comprehensive eye care and performs eye surgery at the Scheie Eye Institute, Penn Medicine Radnor, and Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine locations. In his new role as the Director of Acute Care Services, he oversees the delivery of quality and timely care to patients with urgent ophthalmic needs. Dr. Meijome also has a strong interest in resident and medical student education. He can frequently be found in the walk-in clinic, working one-on-one with resident doctors and medical students to care for patients with urgent eye issues. His dedication to teaching and mentoring the next generation of ophthalmologists reflects his commitment to advancing the field. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Meijome has been actively involved in community outreach. He regularly volunteers at Puentes de Salud, providing eye care to uninsured patients and contributing to the health and well-being of the local community. Tomas has worked with other faculty members and Puentes de Salud to implement a referral pipeline to ensure access to eyecare for patients who require higher levels of care. His commitment to service and his innovative approach to ophthalmology make him a valuable addition to our department.
Dr. Meijome is passionate about global ophthalmology and is dedicated to improving access to eye care in under resourced settings. He continues to volunteer abroad and has previously worked in Peru, Ecuador, Jamaica, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and India. He also serves on the Sierra Leone Serabu Eye Clinic as medical staff and as an advisory board member. His work focuses on developing sustainable eyecare systems, addressing disparities in eye health, and ensuring access to quality care for all individuals, regardless of their socioeconomic status. He is excited to further develop the departments' global ophthalmology initiatives.
